Chihuahua Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average life span of a Chihuahua?

The average life span of a Chihuahua is generally 8-15 years, depending on the specific dog. The dog's diet, whether it had its proper vaccinations, activity level, all of these things contribute to a dog's life span, and of course one dog is never exactly the same as the next. On average, its about 8-15 years.

Are Chihuahuas Expensive?

Are Chihuahuas Expensive? The price of a Chihuahua depends on the area that you live in. Prices generally differ in different regions. Also, prices differ according to what it is your looking for. As you should expect, show quality male and females will be higher than the average Chihuahua. Also, in some cases depending on the breeder dogs to be used for breeding may be higher as well. However, if your just looking for a nice pet, prices are usually pretty reasonable depending on the breeder you go to, and the area you live in. One thing we must point out, don’t let price determine your decision. Just because a dog has a cheap price on it, doesn’t mean the dog is healthy. You could end up paying a lot more than you anticipated in health care because you went for a "cheaper" dog. Just don’t let price always be the determining factor in the dog you buy, other things such as the breeder, and health guarantees are something you should consider as well.

I’ve heard that Chihuahuas are very high strung, yappy dogs, is this true?

This is the very stereotypical definition of what the Chihuahua is. Almost everyone who has never owned a Chihuahua will tell you this. I disagree. Are the Chihuahuas high-strung? Yes, they can be a little high strung, but it depends on your definition of high strung. If you define high strung as being active, barking easily, scared and nervous in new environments or in some cases with new people,, and gets extremely excited in happy situations such as your coming home from work, then yes, they are. But this isn’t always the case with them, a lot of Chihuahuas are this way, but some aren’t. I’ve seen Chihuahuas who love everyone, their always happy to greet a stranger and seek a warm, friendly lap. Some Chihuahuas hardly bark at all. If you socialize your dogs at a young age, it may help prevent some nervousness and fear with new people and environments, and it may not help at all.

This is something to consider when you first get your new puppy. However, no Chihuahua owner will tell you that they are yappy, they see all the little things such as the barking or nervousness as part of their wonderful companion, not a nuisance whatsoever. While they are nervous in new surroundings and with new people, to their owners, they are the most loyal, loving dogs that you can have. They give as much love in return as you give them times ten. Anyone who owns a Chihuahua will tell you, there is no other breed like them.

Are Chihuahuas Good With Children?

This is a difficult question to answer, because all Chihuahuas are different. If a Chihuahua is raised up with children and is used to being around them, they can be absolutely 100% fine with children. However if you take a Chihuahua who has never been around a child, and put them in a situation with children, they are likely to not do well. To say they aren’t good with children would be false. So, to sum it up, some Chihuahuas are good with children, some aren’t. Let this be a judgement you make, only you know your Chihuahua, and also only you know your children. However, we don’t recommend them to homes with very small children because they are so small and accidents can happen. It all depends on the dog, the situation, and the children involved.

Are there differences between the long and smooth coat Chihuahuas?

This is a highly discussed topic by Chihuahua breeders and owners. Many people disagree on this subject. Some people seem to believe that the smooth coats are more energetic and bold, and that the long coats are more laid back and reserved dogs. I haven't found this to be the case. Our experience is that it all depends on the individual dog. However, some disagree, and it's a highly debatable topic.

However, if your looking at the shedding aspect of the two different coats, you may be surprised. Smooth coats usually shed year round, much to many people’s surprise. Where as long coats shedding is usually seasonal. These are all things to consider, however both coats make good house pets. Its all a matter of you and what your looking for.

Is there a difference between male and female Chihuahuas?

Which make better house pets?

I believe there is a difference between male and females, just like us, men and women are different. A lot of people seem to think that females are sweeter and make better pets. This isn’t always the case. In my experience, I have found males to be much sweeter, and a lot less timid. Many people think that females wont do things that are commonly known to male dogs, such as humping and marking. They seem to believe that females are sweeter. This isn’t the case. It really depends on the person and what they are looking for, however don’t think that female Chihuahuas are sweeter and more docile than males, because this isn’t always the case.
